General Elections 2011
Oh yeah do not be alarmed by the title haha. I shall post something which has more depth than my usual rantings to prevent my blog from degrading into a ranting venue of a depressed shallow 22 year old (omg Im old)
This is an exciting year for us because this is the first time we get to vote and then theres this new group contesting thing introduced and I believe this year's number of opposing parties is definitely more than ever with competition in practically every constituency.
Ok so I just got back from a rally and I guess this is supposed to be the time when I am best able to gather all my thoughts and pen them down here. I just attended the PAP rally for the Bukit-Timah-Holland and Bukit Panjang area. Ok fine I attended half the rally haha. I guess my main aim was to listen to Teo Ho Pin since hes the person of concern to me and I did just that and left the place. The rally started with a lot of grandfather and grandmother short stories from various committee members and Im sorry but half of the languages I couldnt understand so yah I was stoning quite a bit haha. And being the princess that I am I had to keep shuffling my feet around to get the flies and grasses off so that I dont get annoyed and itchy haha.
So basically Teo HP promised a long list of things to come and I guess we can at least say that its safe to assume that PAP will be able to fulfill these promises. Unlike the opposing party where people always question their ability to accomplish everything they promised without the support of the government.
I pointed out to my mum that I felt that this year we might have more opposing party taking up seats because of the current younger generation's trend of wanting a change in the system. But like a lot of people have mentioned on facebook "are we ready for this change?" and personally I guess maybe not. My feelings towards a change is positive. I would definitely welcome a new voice in the parliament and I reckon it would actually have a positive impact on the parliament BUT I personally have not noticed any worthy candidate. I have seen a lot of short speeches and shoutouts from the opposing parties on the news but so far no one has appealed to me and convinced me that hey hes good and I would rather him than the PAP person. But personally PAP's mode of campaigning does not appeal to me because they keep harping on what the opposing party CANNOT do instead of focusing on what PAP CAN do. Saying things like "Hey Im sure you dont want your town to become like Potong Pasir" just feels too cheap to me.
On a personal note, my vote goes out to the individual and not the party that he is from. I have known Teo HP my whole life and he has been there for every event. When I received my awards in primary school, he was there to congratulate me, whenever I performed at BPCC he was there to tell me "good job" and I think these small interactions go a long way. And more importantly I ask myself: Have I been living comfortably for the past 22 years? And my answer is yes.
Saw the SDP candidate on TV and what I feel is that SDP is treating BP as an easy to win-over state stressing on things such as "Please help us win-over BP" What I feel the opposing parties are trying to do is to contest as many seats as possible so that the chances of them obtaining a seat in the parliament would be increased and not based on grounds such as "I would like to make BP a better place or I would like to do something for BP" BP is merely treated like a pawn in their game and this does not sit well with me.
I guess we all can pretty much guess who my vote goes to. Just me 2 cents worth. Phoebe Feehily signing off now ciao!
